Edinburgh University's Faculty of Social Sciences was founded in 1963. It absorbed eight Chairs that had previously existed within the Faculty of Arts, and led to the creation of several new Chairs:
- Economic Science (founded 1871)
- Education (1876)
- Accounting (1919)
- Organisation of Industry and Commerce (1925)
- Psychology (1931)
- Geography (1931)
- Architecture (1948)
- Economic History (1956)
- Social Anthropology (1964)
- Urban Design and Regional Planning (1964)
- Economics (1965)
- Sociology (1965)
- Social Administration (1967)
- Nursing Studies (1972)
Following university restructuring in 2002, the Faculty of Social Sciences was dissolved, and its constituent Departments became five Schools within the College of Humanities and Social Science:
- Business School
- Economics
- Health in Social Science
- Philosophy, Psychology and Language Science
- Social and Political Science
