Lecturer in Anatomy at the University of Edinburgh, later became the first Regius Professor of Anatomy at the recently formed University of Aberdeen.
His daughter Christina married Frederick Maternus Neicks (1845-1924), another, Jane, to Simon Somerville Laurie (1829-1909).
