The minutes of the Senatus Academicus begin in 1733 as the College Minutes. They run unbroken from that day until the present. Until the minutes of University Court begin in 1859, they are the principal record of University governance held by the University. Generally speaking, once Court took over as senior committee following the Universities (Scotland) Act 1889, it dealt with governance and Senatus with high-level academic affairs but both frequently exchanged reports and consulting minutes of both are often required to see the 'whole picture'.

The minutes also record degrees awarded, and who attended/officiated at graduation ceremonies.

There is a cumulative index for 1733-1858 which is available as a searchable online database. Thereafter each volume has its own index.
