The first Chair of Music was founded in 1839, following a bequest from General John Reid. It was based in the Faculty of Arts. The first Professor was John Thomson, later to be son-in-law to Principal John Lee. Thomson died shortly after taking up the post and was succeeeded by Henry Rowley Bishop. Next came John Donaldson and it was on Donaldson's watch that major development of the subject area began to take place.
