In 1776, the Scottish portrait and genre painter David Allan (1744-1796), best-known for his artistic collaboration with Robert Burns (1759-1796), was appointed Master of the Trustees Drawing Academy, the forerunner of Edinburgh College of Art. Remaining in post until his death in 1796, he taught major Scottish artists such as Alexander Nasmyth (1758-1840)mand George Walker (fl. 1781–1815).
