In 1776, the Scottish portrait and genre painter David Allan (1744-1796), best-known for his artistic collaboration with Robert Burns (1759-1796), was appointed Master of the Trustees Drawing Academy, the forerunner of Edinburgh College of Art. He remained in post until his death in 1796.
