Born 1669, being the second son of Gavin Hamilton of Airdrie and Jane, daughter of Robert Montgomerie of Hessilhead. He graduated MA from the University of Edinburgh in 1686, eventually becoming the minister of Cramond in 1694. Several years later he married Mary Robertson (1676-1760) and had nine sons and four daughters.
