This revised the earlier Universities (Scotland) Act 1858 in a number of ways but, the principal change was in the relationship between and the responsibilities of the University Court and the Senatus Academicus. Court became the chief body of governance, with Senatus focusing on teaching and discipline. Court could also review Senatus decisions on appeal and appoint professors where the Chair fell under University jurisdiction.
