Sir Andrew Ramsay (1619-1688)

Sir Andrew Ramsay, Lord Abbotshall, was (Lord) Provost of Edinburgh from 1654 to 1658 and from 1662 to 1673. In 1665, he was instrumental in securing the transfer of the Rectorship of Edinburgh University to the Lord Provost of Edinburgh. His father Andrew Ramsay (1574-1659) had been the first Rector of Edinburgh University after it became a discrete post in 1620.
