Sir Andrew Balfour (1630-1694) was the co-founder of the Edinburgh Botanic Garden with Sir Robert Sibbald (1641–1722). He has also been credited with securing the appointment of James Gregory (1638-1675) as the first Professor of Mathematics in 1674, and later the appointment of Gregory's nephews David Gregory (1659-1708) and James Gregory (1666-1742) to the same Chair.
