'''Sir Andrew Balfour (1630-1694)''' was the co-founder of the [[Creation of Edinburgh Botanic Garden, 1670|Edinburgh Botanic Garden]] with [[Sir Robert Sibbald (1641–1722)]]. He has also been credited with securing the appointment of [[James Gregory (1638-1675)]] as the first Professor of [[Mathematics]] in 1674, and later the appointment of Gregory's nephews [[David Gregory (1659-1708)]] and [[James Gregory (1666-1742)]] to the same Chair.
