James Gregory (1666-1742) succeeded his brother David Gregory (1659-1708) as Professor of Mathematics at Edinburgh University in 1692. He held the post until 1725 when ill health forced him to retire, and Colin Maclaurin (1698-1746) was appointed him as his deputy. Gregory officially remained on the university staff as joint professor and continued to draw the salary for the Chair until his death in 1742.
