The School of Physics and Astronomy in the College of Science and Engineering was founded in 2002 as part of a major restructuring of Edinburgh University. This saw the university's nine Faculties reconstituted as three Colleges, while Departments were reorganised and replaced by Schools. The subject areas covered in the new School of Physics and Astronomy had previously been taught within the Faculty of Science and Engineering.
