He served as Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland five times and refused the Bishopric of Edinburgh as he did not accept episcopacy and was thereafter minister at Greyfriars and Pencaitland.<br /> <br /> He was appointed [[Rector]] of the College in 1649.
