== Biography ==

Stewart was born in Thurso, Caithness, and educated at Glasgow High School and Glasgow University, where he graduated M.A. in Classics (First Class Honours) in 1932. He went on to qualify and work as a Chartered Accountant. During the Second World War he served as an Intelligence Officer with the Seaforth Highlanders in France and Belgium. He was wounded and captured at Ypres in 1940, and spent five years in Prisoner of War camps, where he devoted much time to teaching and organizing courses of academic standard in various subjects. In 1945 he was appointed Assistant Registrar at the University of Liverpool. Three years later he was appointed to the Secretaryship of Edinburgh University. An extremely able administrator and a devoted servant of the University, he was awarded the O.B.E. in 1961 and received the degree of Doctor of the University honoris causa on his retiral in 1978.
