'''Hugh MacDiarmid''', the pseudonym of Christopher Murray Grieve (1892-1978), was the pre-eminent Scottish literary figure of the 20th century. He twice stood for the [[Rector|Rectorship]] of the University of Edinburgh in 1935 and 1936. He was awarded the honorary degree of LLD by the University on 5 July 1957. Edinburgh University Library holds a substantial collection of his literary manuscripts and incoming correspondence amongst its [[Scottish Literary Papers]].
