William Law of Elvingston was appointed Regent of Philosophy at Edinburgh University in 1690, following a purge of Episcopalian and Jacobite teaching staff. Upon the abolition of the regenting system in 1708, he was appointed to the Chair of Moral Philosophy, remaining in post for the rest of his life.
