Edinburgh solicitors, and father and son, John and (Sir) Henry Cook were appointed joint factors and law agents to the University of Edinburgh by the [[University Court]] on 08 January 1890. Under the [[Universities (Scotland) Act 1858]], the Factor had previously been responsible to the Senatus and John Cook had held that position since before that date. They were responsible for making all payments under the Ordinances of the University Commissioners of 1858, such as for University Assistants, class expenses, Examiners etc. Sir Henry Cook was succeeded by his son John. In c1954 David Bogle of Lindsay Howe & Co., became the University Law Agent, holding this position until c1964 when the in-house position of Factorial Secretary was created.
