Sir Sydney Alfred Smith (1883-1969), the renowned forensic scientist and pathologist, was Regius Professor of Forensic Medicine at Edinburgh University from 1928-1953. He served as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine from 1931-1953 and, in 1954, was elected Rector.

He was the father of the poet Sydney Goodsir Smith.
