Medical Officer of Health for Argyllshire and book collector

Born in 1853 on Colonsay in the Inner Hebrides, the son of a cattle herder, he was a medical graduate of the University. He presented to Edinburgh University Library the library of Donald Mackinnon (1839-1914), first Professor of Celtic in the University of Edinburgh (the Chair endowed by Professor John Stuart Blackie (1809-1895)). The collection comprises some 1,700 19th century books and pamphlets on a wide range of Celtic studies and Scottish theology.
