Born in 1853 on Colonsay in the Inner Hebrides, the son of a cattle herder, he was a medical graduate of the University.  He presented to Edinburgh University Library the library of [[Donald Mackinnon (1839-1914)]], first Professor of [[Celtic]] in the University of Edinburgh (the Chair endowed by Professor [[John Stuart Blackie (1809-1895)]]). The collection comprises some 1,700 19th century books and pamphlets on a wide range of Celtic studies and Scottish theology.
