John Buchan (1875-1940), 1st Baron Tweedsmuir, was one of Scotland’s most critically and commercially successful novelists, while playing a major role in public life both as a publisher and a politician. He was Unionist MP for the Combined Scottish Universities from 1927 until 1935. In 1937, he was elected Chancellor of Edinburgh University, a post which he held until his death. Edinburgh University Library holds a substantial collection of letters to and from Buchan amongst its Scottish Literary Papers.
