James Moultrie (1766-1813) was the second son of John Moultrie (1729-1798), the first US-born graduate of Edinburgh University. He followed in the footsteps of both his father and his (Scots-born) grandfather by graduating M.D. from the Edinburgh Medical School. He then returned to his hometown of Charleston, South Carolina, where he married his cousin Katherine Moultrie. Their son, also named James, became Professor of Physiology and Dean of the Medical College of the State of South Carolina.
