Hugh MacDiarmid, the pseudonym of Christopher Murray Grieve (1892-1978), was the pre-eminent Scottish literary figure of the 20th century. He twice stood for the Rectorship of the University of Edinburgh in 1935 and 1936. He was awarded the honorary degree of LLD by the University on 5 July 1957. Edinburgh University Library holds a substantial collection of his literary manuscripts and incoming correspondence amongst its Scottish Literary Papers.
