The Chair of French was created in 1918. In 1951 it was renamed the Chair of French Language and Romance Linguistics, and a second Chair of French Literature was created. In 1969, the Chair of French Language and Romance Linguistics was renamed the John Orr Chair of French Language and Romance Linguistics. In 1980, the Chair of French Literature was renamed the Chair of French. In 1981, the John Orr Chair of French Language and Romance Linguistics became the John Orr Chair of French (with no particular emphasis on linguistic studies). In 2014 a new Chair of French Literature and Film Studies was created.

Since 2006 there has again been a single Chair of French, accompanied, since 2014, by a Chair of French Literature and Film Studies.
