In 1776, the Scottish portrait and genre painter David Allan (1744-1796), best-known for his artistic collaboration with Robert Burns (1759-1796), was appointed Master of the [[Trustees Academy School of Art|Trustees Drawing Academy]], the forerunner of [[Edinburgh College of Art]]. Remaining in post until his death in 1796, he taught major Scottish artists such as Alexander Nasmyth (1758-1840) and George Walker (fl. 1781–1815).
