Along with the Rector (in its modern guise) and Vice-Chancellor, the office of Chancellor was instituted following the Universities (Scotland) Act 1858. Elected by the General Council, the office was held for life until 2010, when the Duke of Edinburgh retired after almost six decades of service.

- 1953 - Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh (1921- )
- 2011 - Anne, Princess Royal (1950- )
