Alan Stark graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1933 with the degree of Bachelor of Law and became a member of the Law Society in 1939. A partner in the Edinburgh law firm of Morton, Fraser and Milligan, he was a bibliophile and book-collector.

In 1988 his family presented to the University Library over 1,500 volumes from his personal library; many of these books were published in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s and include notable illustrated editions and private press books.
