George Stuart was born circa 1715, He held the Chair of Humanity at Edinburgh University between 1741 and 1775. Between 1747 and 1763 he also held the office of Librarian but he was said 'to have been inefficient in his management of the Library'.
Professor George Stuart died at Fisherrow, Musselburgh on 18 June 1793.
